The Fundamentals of Good Aim

Good aim in CS2 isn't just about flicking to heads — it starts with fundamentals that most players overlook. Before practicing flashy flick shots, master these basics.

Crosshair Placement

The single most impactful aiming skill. Crosshair placement means keeping your crosshair at head height and pre-aimed at angles where enemies are likely to appear. Good crosshair placement means you need to make smaller adjustments to hit your target.

  • Head height — keep your crosshair at standing head level at all times, even when moving around the map
  • Pre-aim common angles — before peeking a corner, place your crosshair where the enemy's head would be
  • Adjust for distance — head height changes with distance due to perspective
  • Practice in empty servers — walk around maps focusing only on keeping crosshair at head height

Types of Aim

Flick Aim

Quick, snappy movements to a target. Important for AWPers and for correcting when enemies appear where you don't expect them. Practice with Aim Botz workshop map — set fast spawn intervals.

Tracking Aim

Following a moving target smoothly. Essential for spraying at moving enemies. Practice in Deathmatch against real players who move unpredictably.

Micro-Adjustments

Small, precise corrections when your crosshair is close but not exactly on target. This is where good crosshair placement pays off — you only need tiny adjustments instead of large flicks.

Recommended Daily Routine

A structured 30-minute warm-up before playing competitive:

  1. 5 min — Aim Botz: 100 kills at medium speed, focus on one-taps to the head
  2. 5 min — Recoil Master: Practice AK-47 and M4 spray patterns
  3. 10 min — Deathmatch: Focus on crosshair placement and counter-strafing, don't worry about score
  4. 10 min — Prefire Practice: Run through the maps you'll be playing in competitive

External Aim Trainers

Aim Lab and Kovaak's are popular external aim trainers that offer structured scenarios. While they don't perfectly replicate CS2's movement and shooting mechanics, they're useful for building raw mouse control and reaction time.

Common Mistakes

  • Practicing without purpose — just running Deathmatch aimlessly doesn't improve specific skills
  • Ignoring crosshair placement — the best aimers aren't the fastest flickers; they need less correction because their crosshair is already close
  • Changing sensitivity too often — pick a sensitivity and stick with it for weeks
  • Not warming up — jumping straight into competitive without warming up leads to slow starts
  • Neglecting movement — counter-strafing (tapping the opposite direction key to stop instantly) is crucial for accurate shooting
