CS2 Case Opening Guide
How CS2 Case Opening Works
Cases in CS2 contain weapon skins of varying rarity. To open a case, you need the case itself and a key ($2.49 from the in-game store). The item you receive is determined by a random number generator at the moment of opening — the spinning animation is purely visual.
Official Drop Rates
Valve disclosed approximate drop rates in 2023 following regulations in certain regions:
| Rarity | Color | Drop Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer Grade | White | Not in cases |
| Industrial Grade | Light Blue | ~79.92% |
| Mil-Spec | Blue | ~79.92% (combined with above) |
| Restricted | Purple | ~15.98% |
| Classified | Pink | ~3.20% |
| Covert | Red | ~0.64% |
| Exceedingly Rare (Knife/Gloves) | Gold | ~0.26% |
StatTrak versions have approximately a 10% chance within each rarity tier.
Understanding RTP (Return to Player)
RTP is the percentage of money you can expect to get back on average. For official Valve cases, RTP is typically 40-60% — meaning for every $2.49 spent on a key, you'll get back $1.00-$1.50 worth of skins on average. Cases are gambling, and the house (Valve) always wins over time.
Best Cases to Open (Value Perspective)
Some cases have better RTP than others due to containing high-value items:
- Cases with expensive knives — the knife/glove pool determines much of the case's expected value
- Newer cases — tend to have higher-value items initially, but prices normalize over time
- Limited cases — special event cases may contain unique items with lasting value
Important: No case has RTP above 100% over a large sample. Case opening is entertainment, not investment. Only spend what you can afford to lose.
Third-Party Case Opening Sites
Third-party sites offer their own cases with custom item pools and different RTP values. Some advantages over official cases:
- Often higher RTP (some advertise 80-95%)
- Custom cases themed around specific items
- Bonus systems, free cases, and promotions
- Ability to withdraw skins or convert to balance
However, always verify that the site is reputable. Check our trusted site rankings for reviewed platforms.
Tips for Case Opening
- Set a budget — decide how much you're willing to spend before you start
- Don't chase losses — if you've spent your budget, stop
- Understand the math — you will lose money on average, period
- Compare RTP — if using third-party sites, compare RTP values
- Consider buying directly — if you want a specific skin, buying it from a marketplace is almost always cheaper than trying to unbox it
- Remember: the animation is fake — the item is determined before the wheel spins
