CS2 Roles Guide
The Five Core Roles in CS2
Professional CS2 teams operate with defined roles that maximize each player's strengths. While matchmaking is more fluid, understanding these roles helps you contribute more effectively to your team.
Entry Fragger
The entry fragger is the first player to push into a site during executes. This role requires:
- Fast reaction time — you'll be taking the first duel every round
- Aggressive positioning — you peek first and create space for your team
- Strong aim mechanics — flick shots and spray transfers
- Willingness to die — your job is to get the opening kill or at least deal damage and gather information
Notable entry fraggers: ropz, flameZ, Twistzz
AWPer
The primary AWP player holds angles and gets picks. The AWP costs $4,750, making this player an economic investment:
- Positioning knowledge — knowing the best angles on every map
- Patience — holding angles without peeking unnecessarily
- Quick scope accuracy — hitting the first shot consistently
- Survival instinct — the AWP must be saved when rounds are lost
Notable AWPers: ZywOo, s1mple, m0NESY, device, broky
In-Game Leader (IGL)
The IGL calls strategies, reads the opponent, and makes mid-round decisions:
- Map knowledge — deep understanding of timings, rotations, and setups
- Communication — clear, calm callouts even under pressure
- Tactical creativity — developing strategies and adapting them in real-time
- Reading the opponent — predicting enemy setups based on patterns
IGLs often sacrifice personal stats for team success. A great IGL makes everyone around them better.
Notable IGLs: karrigan, HooXi, FalleN, nexa
Support
The support player enables teammates through utility and trade kills:
- Utility mastery — knowing every smoke, flash, and molotov lineup
- Trade fragging — following the entry fragger and securing the trade kill
- Selfless play — flashing for teammates, dropping weapons, playing less favorable positions
- Clutch ability — support players often find themselves in clutch situations
Notable support players: rain, Perfecto, KSCERATO
Lurker
The lurker plays away from the team, gathering information and catching rotations:
- Map awareness — understanding enemy rotations and timing
- Patience — waiting for the right moment to strike
- Solo play ability — winning 1v1 and 1v2 situations
- Information gathering — calling enemy positions without being detected
Notable lurkers: NiKo, electroNic, EliGE

Tips for Any Role
- Be flexible — in matchmaking, you may need to fill different roles
- Communicate — regardless of role, callouts win rounds
- Practice your role-specific skills — AWPers should practice flicks, support players should learn lineups
- Watch pros who play your role — study their positioning, decision-making, and utility usage
