Astralis have officially ended their all-Danish era. On January 8, 2026, the legendary organization unveiled Swedish AWPer Love "phzy" Smidebrant and Lithuanian rifler Gytis "ryu" Glušauskas as their newest players, marking the first time in Astralis history that the roster is not entirely composed of Danish players.
The New Lineup
- HooXi (Rasmus Nielsen, Denmark) — IGL
- jabbi (Jakob Nygaard, Denmark) — Rifler
- Staehr (Victor Staehr, Denmark) — Rifler
- phzy (Love Smidebrant, Sweden) — AWPer
- ryu (Gytis Glušauskas, Lithuania) — Rifler
The Danish core of HooXi, jabbi, and Staehr remains intact, providing continuity and leadership. But the addition of two international players signals a clear strategic shift — Astralis are prioritizing individual talent and role fit over national identity.
Who Is phzy?
Phzy arrives after a turbulent 2025 that saw him represent both Wildcard and 9INE in separate stints. Despite the instability, his numbers speak for themselves — a 1.15 average rating across the year, with particularly impressive performances in high-pressure matches. His aggressive AWP style contrasts with the more methodical approach Astralis traditionally favored, potentially adding an unpredictable element to the team's attack.
Who Is ryu?
Ryu's path to Astralis is a classic development story. He started at Monte's academy squad (Monte Gen) before earning a permanent promotion to the main team in January 2025. Over the next twelve months, he averaged a 1.13 rating against increasingly strong competition, proving he could handle the step up in level. His consistency and versatility as a third rifler made him an attractive target for Astralis.
Why Go International?
The Danish talent pool, while historically dominant, has become increasingly competitive to recruit from. Organizations like Heroic, Copenhagen Flames, and others all compete for the same players. By looking outside Denmark, Astralis dramatically expanded their options.
There is also a practical argument: the best available players at the positions Astralis needed simply were not Danish. Rather than compromise on talent for the sake of tradition, the organization chose to evolve.
The Road Ahead
Phzy and ryu made their Astralis debut at the BLAST Bounty Season 1 closed qualifier on January 13. The early results will be closely watched — not just for wins and losses, but for how quickly the international communication integrates with the existing Danish structure.
The pressure on this roster is immense. Astralis carry the weight of four Major championships and a legacy as one of the greatest teams in Counter-Strike history. Whether phzy and ryu can help restore the organization to its former glory — or whether the international experiment will struggle to recapture the magic — is one of the most compelling storylines of the 2026 CS2 season.
