The PGL Bucharest confetti hasn't even settled and the CS2 circuit is already wheels-up for South America. IEM Rio 2026 begins on April 13 in Brazil, bringing 16 teams to compete for $300,000 in what is shaping up to be the most stacked event of the spring season. After watching underdogs dominate in Bucharest, the tier-1 heavyweights are back — and they have something to prove.
Format
IEM Rio uses a two-group, double-elimination format:
- Group Stage (April 13-16): Two groups of 8 teams. Double-elimination bracket (BO3). Top 3 from each group advance to playoffs. Played in closed studios without a live audience.
- Playoffs (April 17-19): 6 teams in a single-elimination bracket (BO3, with a BO5 grand final). Played in front of a live audience at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro.

Storylines to Watch
- Vitality's dominance test: They've won three straight — StarLadder Budapest Major, IEM Krakow, and PGL Cluj-Napoca. Can they keep the streak alive in Rio? ZywOo is chasing his 31st career MVP and has looked unstoppable in 2026.
- NAVI and MOUZ return: Both top-5 teams skipped Bucharest entirely. They arrive in Rio fully rested but without any recent LAN reps. Rust is a real concern in a stacked bracket.
- Brazilian home crowd: FURIA, Legacy, and RED Canids all compete in front of their home fans. The last IEM event in Rio produced some of the loudest crowds in CS history.
- FUT's absence: The PGL Bucharest champions are notably absent from the Rio field. Their next event will be the BLAST Rivals in late April.
- 3DMAX fresh off bronze: The French squad is the only team in the Rio field with deep playoff experience from the last event. That momentum could carry.
